Go Round la premi\u00e8re exposition de l’artiste anglaise en France. \u00c0 travers une quinzaine d’\u0153uvres liminales, la cr\u00e9atrice explore l’inconscient, l’\u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re, la finitude. L\u2019exposition \u00ab Mary! Go Round \u00bb est le r\u00e9sultat d\u2019un dialogue de l\u2019artiste avec elle-m\u00eame. Une concertation flash qui donne des toiles peintes en 20 ou 45 mn. Une performance \u00e9tonnante face \u00e0 la richesse des d\u00e9grad\u00e9s de couleurs et au fourmillement de motifs, de formes parfois cach\u00e9es comme notamment les fen\u00eatres dans les fen\u00eatres de \u00ab\u00a0Inflatable Home<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n

Les quinze toiles pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es oscillent entre figuratif et abstraction. Une distance avec une autre s\u00e9rie o\u00f9 Mary Stephenson peignait des figures de pantins qui jouaient, dansaient et s’enivraient dans une chor\u00e9graphie d\u00e9brid\u00e9e. Un lien demeure toutefois entre les deux moments : le trouble. Une inqui\u00e9tude qui surgit et habite le \u00ab\u00a0playground\u00a0\u00bb de l’espace social et intime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’urgence de peindre<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pour Mary Stephenson il y a urgence \u00e0 traduire en pigments les \u00e9motions ou les messages de l\u2019inconscient. \u00ab\u00a0Mary! Go Round\u00a0\u00bb fait d’ailleurs r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au terme anglais man\u00e8ge \u00ab\u00a0merry go round\u00a0\u00bb, un tourbillon ou un carrousel de sentiments et d’\u00e9v\u00e9nements. \u00c0 cet \u00e9gard la peinture est un m\u00e9dium que l’artiste traite \u00ab\u00a0\u00e0 la fois comme un collaborateur et comme une technique\u00a0\u00bb pour peut-\u00eatre canaliser ou simplement traduire les affects et la conversation qui bouillonne dans son esprit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retenir l’\u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Le r\u00e9sultat est iridescent, flotte entre abstraction et figuration et laisse entrevoir un univers domestique central pour la cr\u00e9atrice. Les formes dessinent des \u00eatres organiques ind\u00e9cis, des paysages aux perspectives brouill\u00e9es, des fils qui attachent les souvenirs (\u00ab\u00a0Inflatable Home<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb de nouveau). Mary Stephenson lutte pour retenir l\u2019\u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re avec des lumi\u00e8res formidables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Espace et couleur au service de l’intime<\/h2>\n\n\n

L’artiste met parfois les couleurs et l’espace au service d’une catharsis autant personnelle que collective. Son motto : l’intime et, en premier lieu, la famille. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans \u00ab\u00a0Delicate Structures<\/em>, In A Sunflower Field<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0, une ferme, une grange, une maison de famille peut-\u00eatre est entour\u00e9e de tournesols. Au-dessus des champs, la perspective semble fuir vers l’infini tandis que la densit\u00e9 des fleurs s’estompe. Comme des souvenirs que l’on peine \u00e0 conserver. Le jaune citron est, sur la majeure partie de la toile, un guerrier qui retient l’attention et capte la m\u00e9moire.<\/p>\n\n\n

On retrouve un peu de la rondeur des tournesols dans \u00ab\u00a0Red and Yellow and Blue<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb o\u00f9 trois boules flottent dans l’espace. L’artiste a peint la toile apr\u00e8s un deuil. L’urgence de ne rien perdre et bien s\u00fbr la dimension cathartique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 la fin du parcours deux tableaux \u00ab\u00a0dialoguent\u00a0\u00bb. L’un \u00ab\u00a0Parent Shell<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0, aux formes organiques presque florales, figure la maison des parents. Tandis que l’autre, \u00ab\u00a05 Swings\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>, tr\u00e8s g\u00e9om\u00e9trique, incarne la fratrie, Mary et ses quatre fr\u00e8res et s\u0153urs. Les angles tr\u00e8s saillants et l’orange claquant r\u00e9sonnent comme une alerte, un danger.<\/p>\n\n\n

Du premier tableau, le fascinant, \u00ab\u00a0Red route\u00a0\u00bb, jusqu’au dernier, \u00ab\u00a05 Swings\u00a0\u00bb, la couleur ensorcelle. Mary Stephenson r\u00e9ussit avec des teintes faites de couches \u00ab\u00a0voiles\u00a0\u00bb \u00e0 flouter les fronti\u00e8res r\u00e9el-irr\u00e9el, \u00e0 installer un monde flottant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary! Go Round est un voyage, une exposition qui installe une atmosph\u00e8re onirique propice \u00e0 l’introspection. Un travail d\u00e9licat et puissant !<\/p>\n\n\n\n
