Van Gogh en roman graphique, une biographie qui retrace les grandes \u00e9tapes de la vie de la l\u00e9gende de la peinture tout en faisant resplendir sa palette.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Van Gogh est l’un des peintres les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres du monde. Le cin\u00e9ma s’est attach\u00e9 \u00e0 ce personnage dont la vie est un roman sombre et flamboyant. On recense une vingtaine de films (Sens critique<\/a><\/em><\/strong>) dont ceux de Renais, Minnelli, Altman, Pialat et, en 2017, Dorota Kobiela et Hugh Welchman avec un long m\u00e9trage peint \u00e0 main. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

La bio graphique reprend l’id\u00e9e de confronter les imaginaires picturaux. Ce qui donne parfois des planches hallucin\u00e9es aux lignes mouvantes et aux couleurs c\u00e9lestes (La Nuit \u00e9toil\u00e9e<\/em>, 1889<\/strong>). Simon Elliott s’attache cependant \u00e0 respecter un ordre chronologique. De l’enfance de l’artiste aux Pays-Bas \u00e0 l\u2019ultime \u00e9tape d\u2019Auvers-sur-Oise. La pi\u00e9t\u00e9, les amours d\u00e9\u00e7us, l’alcoolisme, les liens et les conflits avec son fr\u00e8re et avec Gauguin, la maladie, forment un socle th\u00e9matique classique.<\/p>\n\n\n

L’originalit\u00e9 est de raconter la vie et l’\u0153uvre de Van Gogh avec la voix de Jo, la belle-s\u0153ur de Vincent, le femme de Th\u00e9o, le jeune fr\u00e8re tant aim\u00e9. Le dernier chapitre s’intitule d’ailleurs \u00ab\u00a0Celle qui fit Van Gogh\u00a0\u00bb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simon Elliott plonge dans cette vie hors norme \u00e0 travers l’\u0153uvre autant qu’\u00e0 travers l’humain. Ce qui donne des croquis qui exsudent la col\u00e8re et la souffrance. Le chapitre \u00ab\u00a0\u00c0 la porte de l’\u00e9ternit\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb montre le suicide de l’artiste sorti peindre les bl\u00e9s avec un r\u00e9volter. Les couleurs \u00e9clatent comme la grimace de douleur. Elliott reprend Champ de bl\u00e9 aux corbeaux<\/strong><\/em> (1890) en arri\u00e8re plan de la plaie sanglante.<\/p>\n\n\n

L’illustrateur prend soin de transcrire les sentiments \u00e0 travers les expressions faciales et plus g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement corporelles. C’est le cas \u00e0 l’h\u00f4pital psychiatrique de Saint-R\u00e9my. C’est aussi le cas pour Th\u00e9o apprenant la mort de son fr\u00e8re et pour Jo apprenant la mort de Th\u00e9o peu apr\u00e8s celle de Vincent. Simon Elliott privil\u00e9gie alors occasionnellement les petit formats en carr\u00e9 et une palette sur fond gris qui se distingue de la flamboyance de Van Gogh. Peut-\u00eatre aussi pour d\u00e9marquer l’homme et son entourage de ses cr\u00e9ations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

R\u00e9sultat: un beau livre aussi attachant que facile d’acc\u00e8s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
